Our Kyoto Card Cases showcase beautiful kimono fabric in a perfectly practical way! Carry your small items in them: pass cards, coins or keys!

They are made from beautiful Nishijin-ori (西陣織, Nishijin fabric). It is a traditional textile produced in the Nishijin district of Kyoto in Japan. Nishijin weaving originated in the Heian era of Kyoto, around the year 794, when the city became the new capital city, and weaving was developed for the Emperor's court. These exquisite techniques and traditions have been passed down through generations of artisans to the modern day.

Tsukimi, the Japanese autumn moon-viewing festival is linked to the bunny motif on our popular pouches, card cases, and wallets from Kyoto. It's a time to wear yukata or kimono to go and view the moon and look for the image of the bunny who lives there!

The traditional element of Tsukimi was based on a folktale, about a test the Old Man of the Moon (in some stories he’s a Buddhist deity) tried out on three animals – a fox, a rabbit, and a monkey.  He wanted to see who was the kindest, and so, disguised as a beggar, he asked the three animals if they had any food to spare. Basically, the rabbit was the kindest and so the beggar immediately transformed himself back into the moon and rewarded the rabbit’s kind nature by looking after him!

The case is made primarily of soft black leather, with a black zip top. Stitched onto the front of the case is the beautiful feature of the brocade fabric. It creates a little front pocket.

The Kyoto Card Case is about the size of a credit card, and measures approximately 105mm (width) x 75mm (height).
