Zusetsu Original | Genji Postcard Pack
Our first ever Zusetsu original piece - our Genji postcard - is a beautiful addition to your furoshiki gift-wrapped present!
Sold in packs of 3, the card measures 148mm square and includes 3 envelopes.
I've worked as a professional children's book illustrator for many years, and now my interest is to combine my illustration skills with my passion for Kyoto culture.
The Tale of Genji is a beautiful and immersive story of life at the Imperial court in Kyoto in the 10th century. Many artists have illustrated it, but none more beautifully than Tsuna Isome in the 17th century.
This postcard is my homage to Tsuna Isome's small, delicate art work. (Her original painting measures only 4.6cm x 6 cm!)
I have redrawn the illustration with a fresh new lemon yellow background. My interest was to learn how the Genji artists created their Heian nobles - particularly how they drew the court ladies' hair and beautiful flowing juunihitoe (the gorgeous 12-layered robes that they wore).
You'll see that I have incorporated the appearance of kirihaku - the small foil squares - with which the paper of the Heian court was often beautifully decorated.
I came to know of this beautiful art work through the Keio University FutureLearn online course Japanese Culture Through Rare Books.
1 unit is a pack of 3 cards and 3 envelopes.
Dimensions : 148 x 148 mm.
